A tribute to Erik and Inga Shipp
The following few photos are a tribute to the late, great Erik Shipp.
Not only was he one of Australias leading entomologists, a university lecturer, traveller and explorer, he was the husband of Inga Shipp who, together, invented, manufactured and patented the remarkable ShippShape roof top tents. The design still rates as one of the easiest and fastest erecting roof top tents ever made.
Starting out in 1985 in the family homes' kitchen (that was were the sewing was done by Inga) and the lounge room (that's where Erik did his welding and fabrication of all places), they then moved onto a dedicated factory premises in Sydney to supply hundreds of ShippShape tents to happy customers throughout Australia.
Sadly, Erik passed away in 2011, but is survived by his wife Inga who we have had the pleasure of meeting a few times.
The company has long since been sold by Erik and Inga but is still operated by the current owner in Australia, using Australian WCT canvas and labour. There have been thousands of Shippshape roof top tents sold throughout the world and have no doubt been the inspiration of many a travellers happy journeys.
To the best of our abilities, we will continue to follow Erik and Inga's original plans and designs, which we have the hand drawn versions that date back to 1985. Of course we have made some minor changes in construction, but in essence, as that saying goes "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"
